With nearly eight years since the Bay Area's Babylon A.D. have
issued a studio release, American Blitzkrieg is the band's latest offering and
is a mixed bag of sorts. The core of the sound is rooted in the melodic hard
rock vein that graced their early days, however, it looks like the guys have
tweaked the sound with a slightly heavier approach. The groove-oriented "One
Way Ride" is backed by a bass-heavy main riff and the occasional Zakk Wylde-ish
harmonic while the title track incorporates almost-rapped verses and politically-charged
lyrics. One of the more catchy cuts on American Blitzkrieg is the
saracastic "I Wanna Live", full of great melodies and bluesy licks. The only
ballad on the disc, "The Sky's Falling" is more along the lines of Nothing Sacred's
"Down The River Of No Return" in terms of chord progressions and overall feel.
Of all the tracks on the disc, the last cut, "Superstar", bears the most resemblance
to the band's first two releases. While American Blitzkrieg doesn't top the
first two excellent releases, it is a kickin' comeback album and portrays a
band that hasn't abandoned their roots.
